We cannot overstress the importance of making a will. Each will is tailor-made for the client, taking into account personal financial circumstances, family, commitments and possible taxation, in particular inheritance tax.
After death it is important to those who are left behind that the estate is administered with sympathy as well as with efficiency. It involves obtaining valuations of all of the assets of the estate, agreeing the tax liability, applying for the Grant of Probate (or Letters of Administration in the event that there is no will) and then with the benefit of that Grant gathering in the assets of the estate and administering them according to the will or according to law as the case may be. In some cases a trust may arise under the provisions of a will or an intestacy and that trust could last for many years.
Chris Stocker and Rowan Reavley deal with Wills and our charge for a single will is £175 plus VAT and £250 plus VAT for two mirror wills (for
partners/spouses where each will reflects the other).
It is also appropriate to mention Lasting Powers of Attorney (or LPA's). These are applied for to enable relatives, friends or professional advisers
to administer the affairs of elderly or incapacitated persons who, for whatever reason, are unwilling or unable to manage their own affairs.
There are two sorts of LPA's - a property and finance LPA and a health and welfare LPA. Our charges for preparing these are £395 plus VAT per LPA or
£700 for both. The Public Guardianship Office charge £130 to register each LPA but it is possible to apply for a reduced fee if the applicant has a low
income and capital. We also deal with Court of Protection Orders where someone has lost capacity but has not made an LPA. These charges depend on
the work involved and please contact us to obtain a detailed quote.
